*Tests were conducted on a calibrated chassis dyno at Williams Diesel; Hubbard, Ohio. The truck was in 18th gear, direct drive with the engine fan on; 100% load on the wheels. On four different engines, the turbo lag was GONE. Everyone stated that the turbo spooled up FAST with a touch of the accelerator pedal.

* US EPA Article #205.58(C) states that mufflers can be changed as long as there is no increase in noise. California DMV Article #27150 and #27151VC states that exhaust can be modified as long as it doesn't increase or amplify the sound.

Test Tractor: 2000 Peterbilt 379 Conventional with sleeper, Cummins N14 plus 525 hp electronically controlled engine. 50% tread depth Bridgestone M726 drive tires.
Test Trailer: 2000 Stoughton 102" x 53' van with 65% smooth tread matched tires, loaded with a 35,000 pound net load.
Drive by with Dual OEM Mufflers - 80 dBA Drive by with 5" Straight Pipes and NO Mufflers - 97 dBA Drive by with 5" QP Mufflers inside 5" straight pipes - 80 dBA Drive by with 6" QP Mufflers inside 6" straight pipes - 80 dBA Drive by with 7" QP Mufflers inside 7" straight pipes - 79 dBA
Test was conducted on a concrete road in an industrial park with buildings, trees, etc., giving a "REAL LIFE" simulation, NOT controlled lab results. These tests are for COMPLETE vehicle sound, not just exhaust sound levels. Drive-by tests were measured from 50' away, 6' high, 34 mph with the engine under acceleration at the loudest point of the pull. Engine brakes are still loud with our QP Mufflers. Other engines in different trucks (cabover vs sleek aerodynamic conventionals) with other trailer types (dump, flat with side kit, etc.) along with the type and condition of tires will change the overall sound output. Test conditions will have a huge effect on sound. A busy, concrete interstate in a congested area will be louder than a rural, asphalt 2-lane road.

FAMILIAR SOUNDS ON THE dBA NOISE SCALE
|
|
|
Whisper - 20 dBA Quiet Residential Neighborhood - 50 dBA Normal Speach - 60 dBA Busy Office - 80 dBA Chain Saw @ 50' or Punch Press - 110 dBA Jet Plane @ 50' - 130 dBA Pain Threshold - 150 dBA
Each increase of 10 dBA doubles the sound level. For example, 97 dBA is TWICE as loud as 87 dBA.
